Folding-arm awnings
Retractable fabric shade on spring-tensioned arms — no posts in the way of the braai, no permanent roof blocking the winter sun. The patio's answer to the same afternoon glare that hits the living room.
Turning the patio back into a room
A folding-arm awning mounts against the fascia or wall and extends on spring-tensioned arms — no support posts cluttering the braai area or blocking the view down to the garden. In summer it turns a baking north- or west-facing patio back into somewhere the family actually wants to sit; retract it in winter and the same low sun that was a problem in January is suddenly welcome again. Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics hold their colour under South African UV, and projections run to roughly 3–4m over wide spans — enough to shade a full entertainment area off most Featherbrooke floor plans.
Full cassette, semi-cassette or open
A full cassette seals the fabric and arms away completely when retracted — the right call if the awning faces the weather directly, or simply for a cleaner look against the house. Semi-cassette and open mounting are more budget-friendly options where the awning is more sheltered.
Crank handles work, but motorised control with a wind sensor is what we recommend on every Featherbrooke installation. Highveld thunderstorms build fast in summer, and an awning caught fully open in a sudden gust can be destroyed in seconds. The sensor retracts it automatically the moment wind speed climbs — protecting the investment whether or not anyone's home to do it manually.
Honest limitations
An awning is a shade product, not a rain product — it copes with light drizzle at a pitch, never a proper highveld downpour or standing water. Wind ratings are real limits, not suggestions, and the fixing substrate matters: brick, timber and steel fascias all take the mounting differently, which is exactly what the free in-home assessment is for. LED lighting and a vertical drop-valance are available as add-ons on premium lines, for a patio that's genuinely used after dark.
Folding-arm awnings go up over patios right across our patch — big entertaining decks in Eagle Canyon Golf Estate and Ruimsig, and generous freehold gardens in Wilropark and Northcliff.
